To expand business globally: conducted international market studies; wrote business plans; introduced international partners to U.S. companies in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and other manufacturing and service industries. Results: arranged U.S.-Korean technology licensing agreement; developed plans to invest in Chinese medical device company; set up program to partner with pharmaceutical distributors in Asia and Latin America and to reduce costs by assembling a drug delivery device in China. 

 

To find partners and raise funds: arranged introductions to investors and strategic partners; developed business plans; advised on investment structures for electronics, internet ticketing, healthcare and building supply companies. Results: facilitated international partnering; helped raise over $3.5 million.

To raise capital: created financial model; wrote business plan, private placement memorandum and presentation materials; contacted investors. Results: arranged initial funding; received multiple written indications of interest in second round financing from established venture capital firms. 

 

To provide financial, management and marketing tools: built financial models; oversaw development of an information system. Results: quantified the benefits of outsourced services; completed design and specifications of an IT system that led to decision to apply for patent.

Director, ABN AMRO Asia Capital Investment, Ltd., Hong Kong, which is a leading European bank and global financial institution, among the largest foreign banks in the U.S. 

 

Assisted in building the group’s Asian venture capital investment practice. Headed activities in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Managed project teams of between two and four professionals. 

 

To source, develop and reduce risk in investment projects in China and other Asian countries: directed teams; identified opportunities; introduced industry partners; conducted due diligence; performed valuations; wrote proposals; negotiated private equity investments in healthcare, manufacturing, telecom and plastics projects among others. Results: originated multiple deals; obtained preliminary approvals on 15 projects; invested $45 million in three projects. 

 

To monitor investee companies: served on Boards of Taiwanese PC and Chinese drug companies. Results: approved over $15 million of investments; arranged successful exit of investment.

Managing Director, CHINA ACCESS INVESTMENT & TRADE, Ltd., Hong Kong. Set up this firm to develop investment projects and to provide financial and trade advice. 

 

To exploit a new market: developed plan and selected partners for a vehicle assembly operation in China; wrote fund-raising proposals; sourced Chinese products. Results: $7 million invested in a successful joint venture start-up in Beijing; sourced higher quality and lower cost Chinese products.

Investment Manager, AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL GROUP Investment Corp., Inc., Hong Kong (1994-95) and New York City (1992-93). AIG is a leading global insurance and financial institution. 

 

In Hong Kong, responsible for sourcing, developing and negotiating private equity investment projects throughout China. In New York, conducted investment oversight, portfolio management and fund raising. 

 

To expand Chinese hardware venture ($47 million sales): headed project to introduce and negotiate with Yale Security Inc. to upgrade the venture's technology and expand sales. Results: developed a successful $50 million investment project ($7.5 million invested by AIG funds).

 

To source and develop investment opportunities: identified, conducted due diligence on and negotiated investments in numerous industries. Results: invested $6 million in a retail project; received approvals to invest $45 million in two telecom ventures in China (Motorola and Comcast). 

 

To raise capital for investment funds: conducted investment performance review to establish track record; prepared presentations; wrote prospectuses. Results: helped team raise over $1.2 billion combined for private equity, listed company and infrastructure funds.

Independent Business and Government Consultant to Pacific Rim Services (PRS); Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC); Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Washington, D.C.; the United States Government (dept. of defense and u.s. congress, Ota consultant; dept. of commerce and arms control and disarmament agency intern).

 

To target and strategize acquisitions of U.S. companies for Asian investors: clarified Indian (Tata) and Japanese (Marubeni) clients’ needs and identified attractive U.S. target companies. Results: introduced PRS’ clients to U.S. technology leaders and companies in animation software, foods, healthcare, biotechnology, microelectronics, and computer peripherals and components. 

 

For U.S. Government: conducted threat assessment studies, including U.S. economic competitiveness and Chinese and Japanese technology transfer (SAIC). Results: published studies; prepared analysis and briefs for Congress. 

 

To strategize an entry into China’s highly regulated health insurance market: interviewed key people and conducted research. Developed strategy outline based on successful market entry by other similar industries. Results: strategy accepted by Blue Cross; asked to provide a detailed implementation plan.
